MANAGING IN A DOWNTURN:
Downsizing and Alternatives

The severity of the current economic downturn has caused most employers – public as well as private – to find ways to cut costs. “Restructuring” is the term used to identify options for cost-cutting, and because most of the costs in contemporary organizations focus on employees, most of the options center on layoffs and related arrangements.

In this program, we review what we know about restructuring: The array of cost-cutting approaches, what we know about the consequences of each, and how to choose among them. In addition to downsizing, we also examine a range of alternative approaches, such as reductions in salaries and work hours, elimination of perks, etc. The program features company representatives who will talk about their experience with restructuring as well as advice about navigating the myriad legal issues involved especially in layoffs and other options that affect employees.
