With increased pressures for globalization and fast development of new technology and market, companies around the world are under great pressures to look for business opportunities outside their internal boundaries. A dramatic increase of international mergers and acquisitions imply witnesses such urgent needs. However, there are some empirical evidences showing that more than half of all mergers and acquisitions failed to produce the expected results. The reason for such failure can be attributable to a poor understanding of the value creation mechanism of M&A. In this three-day intensive program, an interdisciplinary team of Wharton and KU faculty, supplemented by leading practitioners, provides a broad, strategic perspective and a detailed examination of key elements of the M&A process. You will learn to select and value acquisition targets, evaluate the long-term potential of the partnership, and integrate them to fulfill that potential. Through a series of discussions with faculty, outside experts, and high-caliber group of peers, as well as use of case studies and simulations, you will gain an understanding of the M&A process from start to finish. Crucial to a successful strategy is an ability to simultaneously manage many different elements of acquisitions. Wharton and KUBS’s approach allows participants to understand the complexity of acquisitions. You will learn techniques for effectively managing this process, from identifying your acquisition strategy to bringing the deal to a close to thinking through integration issues.

Integrating Finance and Strategy for Value Creation

Oct. 16–18, 2008 Seoul, Korea 3,500,000 KRW (~3,398 USD)

Understanding the keys to long-term value creation is central to the success of any manager, but it requires a strong understanding of finance and strategy. During this program, participants will learn how to use financial information to assess the potential future profitability and risk of various strategies in a range of businesses, how the business is managed, and what questions financial statements can and cannot answer. Introduction to basic financial concepts to understand a company as a value creator would be offered for general managers who may not have much exposure to financial concepts. Case studies will be used to demonstrate how some companies have been successful at creating economic value and others have struggled. Integrating Finance and Strategy for Value Creation will help you understand how economic value added (EVA) can be used to measure performance and a company’s key value drivers such as return on invested capital and organic revenue growth. Participants will also explore critical issues such as capital structure, using discounted cash flow, financing organic growth, risk, mergers & acquisitions, and corporate governance.
