U.S. Air Force Selects Base for Its New Cyber Command CenterMay 19, 2009

The U.S. Air Force is selecting Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio as the headquarters for a new cyber command. The base was selected as the best from among several candidates. The operations will focus on defending U.S. Air Force computers against cyber attacks and preventing network disruptions, according to an article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Other potential sites included Langley AFB in Virginia; Offut AFB in Nebraska; Peterson AFB in Colorado; and Scott AFB in Illinois.

Lackland may have been selected because it is already well positioned to deal with cyber security issues. It is home to the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency, the Cryptologic Systems Group, the 67th Network Warfare Wing, the Information Operation Center and the Joint Operation Warfare Command.

The base is also close to the University of Texas at San Antonio's cyber-related research center. The new cyber command center will have a budget of about $1 billion and will create 400 military and civilian jobs.
