Congressional Leaders Demand the White House Counter Alleged China Cyber AttacksOctober 07, 2011
U.S. lawmakers want the White House to address what American intelligence agencies are calling a Chinese cyber theft campaign to siphon commercial and defense secrets from U.S. companies, according to a Los Angeles Times article. And for once, both parties appear to be on the same page. Mike Rogers, a Republican from Michigan and chair of the House Intelligence Committee, said the Chinese government has a “predatory policy of cyber theft.” Diane Feinstein, a Democratic from California and chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, thinks that most cyber intrusions on American companies “emanate from China.” Feinstein asked the Obama administration to address the issue with Beijing, according to the article. Rogers said the U.S. should establish international rules against cyber theft of corporate secrets. "I don't believe that there is a precedent in history for such a massive and sustained intelligence effort by a government to blatantly steal commercial data and intellectual property," Rogers noted at the hearing. Later he told the Times "I feel very comfortable saying that Chinese nation state activities have led to the exfiltration of intellectual property at a staggering rate." China continues to deny it sponsors cyber attacks. |
