The U.S. Navy chief said his service will play a major role in defending the nation's computer networks, according to an article in Defense News.

Adm. Gary Roughead noted that much of the world's Internet travels along undersea cables. "That is the domain of the United States Navy," he said on May 1 at a Center for International and Strategic Studies forum in Washington.

If rivals were to try to disrupt electronic transmissions, Roughead said, the Navy will play a critical role in responding. He said the Navy will have to consider cybersecurity in terms of planning and investments over the next few years.

Roughead did not specify which technology the Navy would use to safeguard the cyberinfrastructure, but he did note that protecting deep water cables might be a task for unmanned vehicles, according to the article. He did not disclose how much such a focus on cyber security would cost the service.
