Survey: Regulation Compliance Now the Top Priority for California Aerospace and Defense ManufacturersOctober 31, 2008

surveyAerospace and defense industry manufacturers say that complying with all the intricate regulations required to maintain a business in California is now, by necessity, their highest priority, according to a new survey.

Published by California Manufacturing Technology Consulting [CMTC] researchers, the survey "Business Barriers and Improvement Strategies" asked manufacturers in the California aerospace and defense arena to rank their most pressing operational issues.

Here are the respondents' top priorities:

  • Regulatory compliance – 31%
  • Strategic planning for future growth – 25%
  • Meeting customer delivery requirements – 24%
  • Reducing costs – 10%

A comparable 2003 survey by CMTC, a private, non-profit think tank, found that the top concern was creating ways to increase sales, followed by finding ways to reduce costs and establish strategic growth plans.

"The industry has had a very good run in orders and activity for the past six to eight years, but people are starting to be concerned about that changing," said John Anderson, CMTC's Aerospace and Defense director.

Anderson said manufacturers are looking to grow their businesses now by using their expertise in areas such as medical devices, the automotive and other manufacturing-related industries.
