Experience & Impact

The world of professional sports continues to be a fast-growing business requiring a new level of leadership. General managers and owners alike face many challenges — from ethical decision-making to operational oversight to fostering a winning organizational culture. Executive Sports Management  is designed to give leaders the strategic frameworks for understanding the dynamics of player and fan engagement and business operations to move their franchises forward.

The program will be led by Kenneth L. Shropshire, David W. Hauck Professor, Professor of Legal Studies and Business Ethics, Director, Wharton Sports Business Initiative; and Christopher Geczy, Academic Director, Wharton Wealth Management Initiative. The program will include panels of successful sports team leaders sharing their frontline stories of leading their teams and growing fan engagement and revenue.

Emphasizing the importance of ethics-based decision-making, this program provides an unparalleled opportunity to enhance business acumen, leadership, negotiation, and communication skills.

Session topics include:

  • Leadership, including leading change
  • Sports Business Management
  • Corporate Governance, Ethics, and Organizational Culture
  • Communication, Influence, and Negotiation
  • Capitalizing on Your Brand

In addition, participants will be exposed to various strategic approaches from major leaders in sports management, and gain insight into corporate governance best practices.

Who Should Attend

The Executive Sports Management Program is designed for owners and senior executives of professional sports franchises, from presidents and general managers to league administrators, as well as those aspire to those positions. As more professional athletes retire and are offered management roles within sports organizations, they too can take advantage of this program. Sports league executives responsible for strategy planning, implementation, and business development who are moving into senior leadership roles within a sports franchise will also benefit. Participants will leave the program with an expanded peer network, plus specific tools they can use to strategically grow their sports franchise.
