Senior Director, Business Development, China

Duties and Responsibilities
- Survey executive education landscape in China on an ongoing basis to determine best practices and current market trends including "hot topics", pricing structure, preferred delivery model and locations to enable effective formulation of China strategy for Custom (CU) and Open Enrolment (OE)
- Partner with Managing Director-CU to identify target prospects and key clients and with Managing Director-OE to determine the nature of OE offerings in China
- Collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders across UPenn and Wharton including the Faculty Director and Managing Director of the China Center to cross-sell wide range of Penn's offerings as needed
- Build and grow relationships with key companies in China by becoming the "face" of Wharton Executive Education (WEE) in China through ongoing communication, visibility at public events and regular in-person meetings
- Represent and articulate WEE's value proposition at key meetings with clients and prospects
- Partner with WEE team to identify targets, prepare sales pitches, close sales (including contracting) and deliver programs in China
- Oversee all aspects of on-the-ground delivery in China in keeping with the highest standards of WEE in collaboration with the Philadelphia delivery team
- Meet assigned revenue targets and drive a highly profitable portfolio of OE and Custom programs in China for WEE
- Build relationships with leading business schools, business development channel partners, conference facilities providers
- Identify qualified local faculty resources to support China business
- Arrange meetings for visiting Philadelphia staff and faculty and provide support as needed
Qualifications
- Previous senior-level experience in executive education and or consultative selling of 15+ years
- Track record of successful selling and business development in China at senior executive levels with key companies
- Strong business acumen
- Master's degree required, MBA or PhD preferred
- Knowledge of Mandarin preferred
- Strong verbal and written communication skills including ability to represent WEE at key public events
- Self-starter with entrepreneurial qualities and ability to work effectively (remotely) with the US team with minimal supervision
- Willingness and ability to travel, work weekends and work from a home-office (as needed)

The Director of Connected Learning will initially have primary responsibility for formulating and implementing a strategic plan for the creation and delivery of Wharton Executive Education's (WEE's) online, non-credit courses and modules aimed at global audiences of mid to senior level managers, including full P&L responsibility. Consistent with the academic quality and rigor expected of the Wharton School, it is envisioned that these courses and modules will adhere to Wharton's concept of "connected learning" – high-touch digital learning experiences that take advantage of the diverse geographic locations and perspectives of participants and instructors, and are of a quality that equals or exceeds that of the traditional classroom.
The Director will oversee the selection of technical platforms and tools; analyze competitive products, services, and pricing models; engage in course design and faculty development; and create a comprehensive business plan that culminates in a the launching of a number of open enrollment courses beginning the second quarter of 2013. Programs will be expected to generate sustainable revenue and margin and serve as a foundation for future organizational growth.
During the developmental phase, the Director will report to the COO. Once courses are launched, the Director will manage the portfolio as a Practice Leader and report to the Managing Director for Open Enrollment Programs. In addition, there will be dotted line reporting to the Managing Director for Custom Programs, as the role will serve as a resource to the Custom team. The position will have an initial term of two years, with renewal dependent on attainment of an adequate and sustainable revenue stream for the connected learning portfolio.

Located in San Francisco, the Senior Director, Western Region Business Development (SrWRBD), will work closely with the Vice Dean of the Aresty Institute of Executive Education and the Client Services teams, and is responsible for driving business within the western U.S. through expansion and new market creation specifically for Wharton Executive Education (WEE). The primary objective is to increase sales of WEE's Custom and Open Enrollment products among prospective clients on the west coast. Additionally, the Senior Director will directly lead, supervise and motivate staff.

Experience with multiple industries, particularly financial services, is strongly preferred. The Director will be responsible for working with key clients to assess an association's membership base's executive development needs and translate those needs into executive education offerings. The Director will be a member of Wharton Executive Education's custom client services group responsible for developing business relationships with Fortune 500 global clients in a variety of sectors but with a specific concentration in the life sciences (health care, pharmaceuticals, and biotech). The Director designs, develops and delivers executive education engagements for mid- to senior level executives within these organizations, and has the ability to engage in strategic discussions with senior leadership. Strong business acumen, strategic thinking, people skills (relationship building), knowledge of adult learning theory and practices and consultative selling skills are critical to success in the role. Business development or sales experience with health care and/or corporate organizations, or experience in learning and development in a corporate setting or executive education organization are preferred.
