Experiential Learning

A hallmark of Wharton Executive Education is its focus on hands-on learning. Decades of research confirm that lessons are best retained and ingrained when they involve immersing students in powerful, memorable stretch experiences. The program includes intensive simulations and group work, and during the on-campus weeks, a wide range of activities that build leadership and promote teamwork.

Community Building

During the Advanced Management Program, you will become part of an exclusive community of highly experienced senior leaders from around the world. Your cohort is limited in size to build camaraderie and maximize the peer-to-peer learning exchange as a wide range of sectors, industries, and companies are represented within the group. Together, in a setting designed to foster collaboration and connection, you will explore the latest research and best practices in every business discipline, discussing challenges and trends with Wharton’s world-renowned expert faculty, CEOs, and other senior leaders on the front lines of business today.

Unlike similar programs, there are no elective sessions in AMP: participants come ready for an active experience and a high level of engagement with fellow participants. You will share your current leadership challenges, and put your knowledge and skills to the test in a variety of stretch experiences and simulations designed to engage and educate. The connections you forge will become a lifelong personal and professional network, keeping the AMP experience relevant well into the future.

Mindfulness and Reflection

Wharton’s whole-person approach also includes addressing the community, social, and physical aspects of senior leadership. You will work in a small group on a social enterprise project that taps your collective business acumen, expertise, and connections to address a pressing societal need. You will experience executive mindfulness and self-reflection sessions designed to help you improve focus and engagement and better manage yourself both personally and professionally.

Through guided reflection you will think deeply about how to reenter your organization. With an emphasis on being a true leader of leaders, you will determine how you can best leverage what you learned in the program to develop those working for you. Faculty will share their greatest challenges and triumphs, including the training of NASA astronauts and elite military forces and leading teams to the summit of Mount Everest.

Summer AMP, which consists of five consecutive weeks on campus, includes a two-day, off-site retreat designed to deepen your thinking on leadership and reflection on the program’s lessons and the ways in which you will personally apply them.

The Partners’ Program

During the last two days of the on-campus session, your spouse, partner, or other guest is invited to participate in the Partners' Program, which features select AMP sessions and social activities. Participants welcome this shared experience and find it greatly enhances and eases their return to home and work.

Global Emphasis

Because most companies today are international in ways both large and small, AMP builds your skills in working across boundaries, leading geographically diverse teams, and developing a deeper knowledge of global markets and geopolitics. Faculty bring new insights developed on the ground from their extensive work in China through the parallel CHAMP program (China’s AMP), as well as companies in India, Africa, Europe, and South America. Your global perspective and connections with leaders from around the world will grow exponentially.

Executive Coaching

Your AMP experience will be enhanced through individual coaching sessions that begin before the program and extend beyond the close.

Coaching not only supports your learning during the fast-paced program but also helps you make the transition back to your workplace. It provides an intentional opportunity to take a step back for reflection, an incredibly valuable learning habit many senior executives don’t take the time to do. Because of the positive impact of coaching, many AMP participants choose to retain their coach for months or years after the official sessions end.

Small group coaching is also a part of AMP. You will receive real-time feedback throughout the program as you share your goals and current challenges with your group. During experiential learning sessions, you will experiment with your stretch goals and have the opportunity to practice new behaviors and make changes during the AMP. Your group is a learning support for each other, and the issues you choose to work on can be reshaped during the program.

Fall-winter AMP combines live virtual sessions with on-campus instruction and offers 10 individual coaching sessions that can be completed over the course of one year.

Summer AMP, which consists of five consecutive weeks on-campus, includes five individual coaching sessions that are conducted during and soon after the completion of AMP.

Executive coaching in AMP gives senior executives an opportunity to reflect on their professional roles and pushes them beyond what they thought was possible, says AMP’s Lead Executive Coach Ilene Wasserman.

Who Should Attend

The Advanced Management Program is designed for senior-level executives within two reporting relationships of the C-suite or executive committee in their organizations.

This program is specifically for:

  • Executives with proven leadership of large organizations who hold positions one or two levels from the CEO and have been identified as central to the company's succession plan
  • Executives who hold C-suite level positions at mid-size companies with significant opportunities for growth
  • Executives with at least 20 years of work experience including significant management experience as a senior-level executive or company officer
  • AMP regularly includes presidents, chief executive officers, heads of major business units, and members of executive committees and operating divisions

Qualified U.S. veterans are invited to apply their Post-9/11 GI Bill tuition benefit toward the cost of this Wharton Executive Education program.

What are the similarities and differences between the 5-week on-campus and the modular versions of AMP?

The guiding philosophy, approach, and learning objectives of AMP are identical no matter which version you attend. You will be led and instructed by the same faculty and program directors, learn the same content, and be coached by the same team of Wharton-trained executive coaches.

Fall-Winter AMP is a modular version that consists of three live virtual sessions (synchronous online) followed by three consecutive weeks on-campus. Fall-Winter AMP provides 10 coaching sessions over the course of one year.

Summer AMP is an on-campus program held during five consecutive weeks in Philadelphia. It includes five coaching sessions, the bulk of which happen during the five weeks on campus.

How is Wharton AMP different from executive education programs at other business schools?

Wharton’s AMP is grounded in key components of peer mentoring, real-time context, and guided practice and reflection. While case studies come into play, learning is largely experiential and interactive.

  • Wharton’s AMP is exclusive and selective, with a small cohort size to maximize learning and camaraderie. The class size is large enough to foster diversity of vertical industries, disciplines, and cultures, but small enough to build strong relationships will all classmates. Other schools often have in excess of 100 participants per program session.
  • Wharton’s AMP includes case studies as part of the curriculum, but they’re not the main focus. Wharton faculty members bring real-time, up-to-date information and trends into the sessions in order to spark discussions about future goals and the possibilities of tomorrow. Other programs rely primarily on historical case studies to educate and illustrate business practices.

What is included in the AMP price? What forms of payment are accepted?

For the Fall-Winter session of AMP, the fee includes three weeks of synchronous online instruction with Wharton faculty, individual and group coaching sessions, plus additional integration and networking sessions managed by lead faculty. Tuition also includes three weeks of on-campus instruction, private accommodations, most meals, and all program materials.

For the Summer session of AMP the fee covers five consecutive weeks on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia. The fee includes classroom lectures and experiential sessions, individual and group coaching, private accommodations, most meals, and all program materials.

If you are accepted into AMP, we will issue your company an invoice. A $15,000 deposit is required to reserve your place. Payment in full — by check, wire transfer, or credit card — must be received at least 60 days before the program start date. A full refund will be issued if cancellation in writing is received 90 days prior to the start of the program. Otherwise, the $15,000 cancellation fee will apply.

Is there an application deadline for AMP?

Admissions are done on a rolling basis, so the earlier you submit your application the better.

It is best to apply at least three to six months in advance of the program date you wish to attend. This should ensure adequate timing for you to delegate your monthly tasks and provide an opportunity to guide and coach your colleagues before your departure. With sufficient time and planning, you will feel confident that everything will be in good hands during your absence.

Where is the program held?

For the Fall-Winter session of AMP, the three live virtual sessions will be conducted via Zoom or Blue Jeans. The three on-campus weeks and the entirety of Summer AMP is held at the Steinberg Conference Center on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia, PA. Participants live in residence and attend classes in the Steinberg Conference Center. It is surrounded by the culture, history, and vitality of the birthplace of the United States. The City of Philadelphia is renowned for its wealth of restaurants, theatre, sports venues, and entertainment.

Will I become a Wharton alumnus/alumna if I complete the program?

Upon completion of AMP, you will be granted Wharton alumni status.

You will be joining one of the largest business school alumni organizations in the world. With more than 99,000 members who live and work in more than 130 nations, the Wharton alumni network helps you stay informed through annual forums around the world.

Upon graduation, AMP graduates will receive a lifelong Wharton email address, as well as access to alumni communications.

I graduated from university several years ago. Do I need to brush up on my finance or business algorithms to attend?

AMP participants come from different professional and educational backgrounds, so the program starts with a quick immersion into key business components. This helps to build a common language before rapidly advancing to a higher, more sophisticated level.

The program has been carefully crafted to address the overarching knowledge and leadership needs of top executives, not undergraduate business majors or recent MBA graduates. We are preparing these senior leaders for their next challenge within their organizations or beyond, and that means becoming “ambidextrous” in business — seeing all perspectives and being equipped with a new global network and framework to draw upon.

How will I manage a five-week hiatus from my job?

Research and experience indicate that five intense weeks (Monday through Saturday) provide the right level of rigor and immersion for a senior management audience. While this is a significant time commitment, successful leaders are able to convert this time away into an opportunity that extends beyond the AMP experience itself. They delegate their daily and monthly tasks to others in their organization, preparing them for greater responsibility. When participants return to the office, they often choose to maintain the new delegation of duties to gain more time to implement the new practices and ideas gained at AMP.

Can my spouse or family attend?

During the last two days of each program, spouses, partners, or other guests are welcome to take part in the Partners’ Program, which features selected AMP sessions and social activities. After more than four weeks of absence, participants welcome this shared experience and find it greatly enhances and eases their return to their home and work environments.

I've been accepted to AMP, but I'm unable to attend. What should I do?

We are more than happy to reschedule your attendance for the next program date, or we can work with you to identify a more convenient session.

Please note these AMP transfer and cancellation policies:

Cancellation: Cancellations received more than 90 days prior to the program’s start date are entitled to a full refund. Cancellations received less than 90 days to the program’s start date will incur a charge of $15,000 (USD).

Transfer: Wharton will consider requests to transfer to another program that has a start date within one year of the date of the program. Requests to transfer received 90 days prior to the program’s start date will not be charged; transfer requests received less than 90 days will incur a $5,000 (USD) administration fee.

Registrants are permitted a maximum of two transfers before forfeiting the entire tuition.

English isn't my native language and I don't work in an English-language environment. Can I still attend AMP?

All AMP candidates must be fluent in English to complete reading assignments and to actively engage in group discussions and activities. AMP is an intense program, and being able to fully communicate in English with your executive peers and Wharton faculty is an integral part of the experience.

If you have taken the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) within the past two years, your score must be 800 or higher.

What other executive education programs does Wharton have for senior executives?

We have many Executive Education programs that enable business leaders to harness and exploit the speed of change that’s happening across their industries, markets, economies, and other related aspects, at home and abroad. All are based on real-time business dynamics, economic challenges and opportunities, global trends, and market shifts.

Additions and refinements to the curriculum are constantly considered. We fully expect half of the programs we will offer in five years to be ones that have yet to be developed.
